How much shade coverage is recommended for a playground?

For optimum protection, we recommend covering at least 40–60% of the total play area, focusing on high-use equipment like slides and climbing frames. Our team can help assess your site and recommend the ideal coverage.

Are your structures safe for use around children?

Absolutely. All Shade Systems playground structures are designed with child safety in mind — featuring smooth finishes, engineered load ratings, and secure fixings. We also comply with NZ standards for early childhood and school safety.

Can you install shade structures during school terms?

Yes — we regularly install during term time with careful planning to ensure minimal disruption. Our team works safely around children and can schedule work outside school hours if needed.

How long do your playground shade sails and structures last?

Our sails use heavy-duty HDPE shade cloth on galvanised steel poles and carry a 10 year fabric warranty; with an annual check and re-tension they last 10 to 15 years, and the steel longer.

What is the difference between a playground shade sail and a waterproof structure?

A shade sail is shade cloth on poles: it blocks up to 98% of UV, lets rain through and can be taken down over winter. A waterproof structure (tensile membrane, hip roof or COLA) is a permanent roof that keeps the area dry and usable in all weather. Most playgrounds need shade; a play space used for lessons or by a club needs cover. We will tell you which on the site visit.
