Project Profile
Raroa Normal
Intermediate.
This project was a journey, but Raroa Normal Intermediate School was determined to bring their vision to life, no matter what. The executive team first discovered the magic of COLA Canopy® (Covered Outdoor Learning Area) structures during a school trip to Australia. They saw first-hand how the COLA Canopy® became a hub for learning, safe play, and a key part of the school’s culture—bringing joy to students and staff alike.
Inspired, they returned home and began exploring their options. That’s when they found Shade Systems! From the start, our focus was on getting the placement just right. With Wellington’s unpredictable weather, the school wanted the COLA Canopy® to be central and easily accessible. Ultimately, they chose the perfect spot—the central court—where the COLA Canopy® would provide shelter and make a bold statement as visitors entered the school.
Since the COLA Canopy® is positioned at the heart of Raroa Normal Intermediate, surrounded by classrooms, accessing the site for installation proved tricky. The area also had several underground services to work around. But, as always, our team rose to the challenge, ensuring the canopy installation went smoothly, even with Wellington’s famous wind and unpredictable weather!
With the addition of lights and a PA system, the final result is simply amazing. The covered court area has become a vibrant space, bustling with activity and energy!
testimonial.

This space honestly wasn’t used, it was just a concrete traditional court at a school and it was rare to see classes out here. Now from 7.30 in the morning to 8 o’clock in the summer months this place is packed!
We went from a concrete strip with nothing to a roof, turf within a week, it was so easy working with Shade Systems!
