Tamaki Primary School
Design for maximum space
Working with Tamaki Primary School to provide shade cover over the area outside a new special needs classroom block gave Shade Systems another chance to showcase their design skills and versatility. As part of the refurbishment of the block of classrooms, the school required a canopy that would provide optimum shade cover without disrupting the flow of the space. It is a busy thoroughfare.
The concept put forward by the designers was for a large free-standing cantilevered canopy with a 100% waterproof PVC cover. This design allowed the space to remain open and unobstructed. It consisted of a single central column. Furthermore, it provided staff and students with a way to remain dry when coming to and from the classrooms in wet weather.
A striking focal point
The structure itself is a work of art. It provides a striking focal point in the new entrance area. The centre pole stands 10.8m high (not including an impressive 3.5m footing) and the rafters curve out towards the buildings. The structure is a perfect marriage of engineering and style. Furthermore, the painted finish on the structure and white PVC of the canopy gleam in the sunlight, giving the whole area a clean, bright and open feel.
