Ruakaka Playground

Ruakaka Playground is the twelfth Whangarei District Council playground to be shaded by Shade Systems.

This playground has been recently upgraded with new play equipment and it is a well-used public space through the summer months. The playground is placed in an area exposed to sunlight, there are no trees to provide shade.

Spencer Jellyman, Parks Technical Officer for Whangarei District Council got in contact with us concerned about the fact there was a lack of shade over the playground. Another concern was that if shade was to be installed, how can we prevent vandalism to the shade fabric.

Our solution was to install a configuration of eight shade sails (to give lots of shade) attaching to 7m high steel poles with spikes to stop climbing and vandalism.

The end result is a fantastic transformation, thanks to Spencer’s colour choices. More importantly, it is great to see Whangarei District Council doing their bit in providing shade to public spaces to help prevent Melanoma in the next generation.
