Little Oneroa Beach Playground

The arrival of summer, which lands conveniently in the New Zealand holiday season, sees an exodus of New Zealanders heading for beaches and holiday destinations around the country. Among the most popular destinations for those in the North Island is the picturesque Waiheke Island – a veritable mecca of wineries, resorts and beautiful sandy beaches. One of the best of these is the beach at Little Oneroa. With white sands, lush surroundings and even a playground for the kids, it’s the perfect location for a family day out.

After results from a survey carried out by the Auckland Council regarding shade over the playground at Little Oneroa, Shade Systems were presented with a design brief and asked to supply concepts and a quote.

Environmentally sympathetic design

The design we presented consisted of 5 shaped and twisted shade sails which joined and overlapped each other. Mounted on painted wooden poles, this aimed to mirror the shape of the surrounding macrocarpa trees and create minimal visual disruption to the landscape. Other features included two poles passing through the centre of two of the sails, adding to the 3-dimensional layered feel of the configuration.

We also designed the sails to be easily removed and reinstalled, as the council wanted to be able to take them down over the winter months. In the installation phase of the project, much care was also taken to ensure no native plants were harmed and that dirt was removed from site to prevent sedimentation of the storm water system.

The completed project is a masterpiece of environmentally sympathetic design, and proved to be a massive hit with visitors and community members alike. Kids can now get out and enjoy all the benefits summer can offer without the danger of sunburn and skin damage – something parents everywhere are grateful for.
