Holy Cross Catholic School
Charity funding helps keep our Kiwi children sun safe
Holy Cross Catholic School is another story of charity funding success! This Henderson based Primary School approached Shade Systems early this year, seeking advice and proposals on shade structures to cover essential play areas, to keep the children safe from New Zealand’s harsh UV.
In New Zealand, more than 90 per cent of skin cancer cases are attributed to excess sun exposure, making us have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. And schools, entrusted with the care of our children, cannot afford to be negligent about sun safety. Shaded spaces are recommended for areas where students congregate to eat, and over play equipment, sandpits and courts. Provision for shaded outdoor teaching spaces and small assemblies should be taken into account, too.
Following an onsite consultation at Holy Cross School, we identified three main areas that needed shade cover and submitted our recommendation to the School.
With no money allocated in the budget for shade systems, Holy Cross took the opportunity to approach The Trusts Community Foundation (TTCF) for support with funds. TTCF agreed to support one of the areas, offering to fund the complete project for the School.
Holy Cross were thrilled with their success and contacted Shade Systems immediately to commence the project. We provided a shading solution in their school colours, with multiple shade sails covering various areas. The main playground area is now buzzing with activity, and most importantly the children are sun safe!
