Takapuna Primary School

An architectural alternative to the standard PVC tensile membrane COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area).
COMPLETED February 2021
FABRIC TYPE Hiraoka 102T

Takapuna Primary School wanted to upgrade an outdoor decking space that was basically a grassy dirt patch covered by some old saggy shade sails. The idea was to create an all-weather play and learning space for their students to use year-round.

As the school wanted a structure that was ‘different’, a design that linked to the ocean and rolling waves; Shade Systems suggested our shell-shaped ‘Shellback’ Canopy design COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area). The school loved the design and gave us the go ahead to install the structure.

Another design feature of this canopy is the addition of the rainheads for storm-water catchment, these also connect to the school drainage system.

Our install team worked in with other contractors and tight deadlines to have the canopy complete. We first laid the framework foundations, then the contractors laid the ocean themed matting. The Shellback COLA was installed after that.

Overall, a very functional canopy with added design flare. This will be a well-used play and learning space for the Takapuna Primary students.

A unique COLA design by Shade Systems – the ‘Shellback’ Canopy.
