Project Profile

Bream Bay

College.

Bream Bay College is an existing client of Shade Systems – we have installed a number of shade structures at this school over the years.

COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area) was part of Bream Bay College’s 10 year upgrade plan. The government’s SIP (School Investment Package) funding announced in November 2019 made this dream a reality and allowed the project to go ahead faster than expected. This grass courtyard area was the first of the school facilities to be upgraded and become an all-weather outdoor learning and play space.

The COLA Canopy had to be built with the 10 year upgrade plan in mind, this came with some challenges for the design and install teams.

Design and installation challenges included having the canopy span over a tuck shop and several walkways, in view of these being removed in years to come. The structure had to fit the space, along with functionality that will stay relevant in the future – this included the architectural design and features of the canopy too.

The overall build took several months to complete. Extra foundations and large pad footings were needed as the ground conditions weren’t favourable. Onsite changes were made to suit conditions.

But in the end, the outcome was worth the wait! The structure is very classy – it has curved lintel beams, symmetrical cantilevered sides, painted red framework, alternating PVC fabric to allow more or less light transmission. All this creative design is truly bespoke to match in with the surrounding school buildings and architecture. This COLA Canopy will be the heart of Bream Bay College for generations to come!
