Project Profile

Whoa!

Studios.

Located in Henderson, Auckland, Whoa! Studios is a dynamic family fun destination with urban and adventure playgrounds. Opening in December 2016, it introduced Australasia’s first crochet playing net—a vibrant structure crafted over two years with 70 kilometres of coloured nylon. This net allows adventurous children to navigate their way up and down through its layers.

To address the challenge of protecting against UV rays and providing shelter, Shade Systems created a bespoke solution. Initially considering a canopy, they ultimately supplied the entire support framework for the crochet net, integrating a PVC canopy into the structure. David Sutherland, the owner of Whoa! Studios, praised Shade Systems for their ideas and flexibility, making the shade system an outstanding feature in the urban landscape.

Adjacent to the crocheted net playground attraction, three overlapping shade sails proudly grace the outdoor cafe space. These aesthetically pleasing structures not only provide respite from the sun but also enhance the overall ambiance of the area. Crafted with precision and an eye for design, the shade sails complement the surroundings with their elegant presence. As customers enjoy their coffee outdoors, the interplay of light and shadow created by these sails adds a touch of sophistication to the outdoor setting, creating a visually appealing and comfortable environment for leisure and relaxation.
